Roger and I went to Padre’s for dinner. It was a favorite of ours, for both its good Mexican food and cozy atmosphere.

I was sipping on a margarita when Roger began chuckling.

“Something amusing you?” I asked.

He scrubbed at his jaw with his hand and nodded, his eyes shining. “I never thought I’d be teased about my love life by a ghost. The ghost of my teenage sister at that.”

I smiled. “Did she keep on teasing after I left the room?”

“Big time.” He blinked and his expression grew serious. “Did you really think Ivy might have trashed your shop?”

“It didn’t quite seem likely, but I had to ask when Lady Silvia brought up the teenage energy.”

“I suppose that’s fair,” he said. He sounded calm but I picked up a burnt tang of irritation. “Ivy was never like that, though. She liked pranks, but wasn’t destructive.”

“I got that impression about her. I’m sorry if that bothered you, but I wanted to be sure. She doesn’t seem the destructive type, but she’s the only teen ghost I know. And her observations about the area helped.”

“Can ghosts sense things like that? I thought they just hung around.” Roger’s eyes were bright, curious.

“Sometimes they can. Not all, but since she and you seemed to have had a stronger bond – and given her efforts to try and possess me – I kind of suspected you might have a bit of magic in your bloodlines.”

“So you thought she might be able to pick up on something the culprit left behind?”

“Pretty much.”

“If there’s magic in my family, does that mean I might have some? I don’t know much about witches and magic, but of the few I’ve met it seems mostly that it’s a woman thing.”

“It seems that way. For some reason. Don’t ask me why that is, though.”

“But Jordan is an exception,” Roger said. “Is it because he has, um, more feminine energy?”

“I can’t say. Just because he’s gay, however, I wouldn’t say he has a feminine energy. He’s not flaming or anything.”

“I was thinking more along the lines of yin and yang.”

“He’s more yin because he’s gay, or because he likes men?”

“I guess?” Roger looked uncertain.

“Does that make a lesbian more yang because she’s not attracted to men, or does it make her super yin because she loves women?”

“I clearly don’t know what I’m talking about,” Roger said. “Am I on the verge of a lecture?”

“No,” I smiled. “And I wouldn’t say you don’t know what you’re talking about. It’s just there are many ways to see things, to interpret things. As for why it seems more women are magical, I can’t say. I have some theories, but someone could probably just as easily argue the opposite.”

“And what is your theory?” He leaned forward, waiting for an answer.

“Well,” I began. “It’s interesting you bring up yin and yang. A lot of witchcraft deals in opposites. Male and female energy. Sun and moon. Giving and receiving. And so on. Though it is hardly tied to Wicca or witchcraft alone.
